After receiving many requests to do a tour of our modern London flat, I decided the best way to show you was in a blog post! It’s very different from our New York apartment, which we were able to decorate and furnish ourselves. In London, we decided it would be easier to move into a fully furnished flat to avoid having to either buy new furniture, or move our old furniture.
I was really hesitant about this at first, because I was imagining a college dorm type of situation (cheap Ikea furniture and cheesy decor). However, it turns out that furnished flats are very common here, and there were tons of great options! We got particularly lucky with this flat, as our landlord’s wife is an interior decorator. While the furnishings aren’t 100% my style, they’re well done and tasteful which was all I could ask for in this situation. I hope you enjoy this little tour of our modern London flat!
Modern London Flat Tour:
The living room is definitely my favorite room in the apartment, and one of the reasons I loved this flat so much. Who could resist those high ceilings?! It really didn’t need much decorating, which was was an added bonus. I brought in a few personal photos and knick knacks for the built-in shelves, bought all new throw pillows, and on the wall over the couch I hung my friend Victorias beautiful London prints. She’s an amazing photographer and all of her lovely prints from across the globe are available in her shop. You can check out more of her work here!
You’ll notice in the last picture I left our laundry rack standing because #reallife. I thought about moving it for the photo, but I figured why not paint the full picture! I bring all the laundry to the living room to dry, and I face the Dyson Hot-Cold fan on the clothes to speed up drying time (pro tip).
Another reason I loved this flat was because I knew this little nook in the living room would make the perfect desk area. It was love at first sight for me and these gorgeous windows overlooking the Kings Road. The apartment did not come with the desk furniture, so I took myself to Ikea and bought the most basic desk, shelves, and chair I could find. I even put them together myself, which I’m still proud of LOL!
The bedroom is probably the most boring room in the flat, which is why I took just one photo. There’s a walk-in closet and full size wardrobe, which is great for a London apartment (they are notorious for having no storage space). The walls are painted a moody grey, so I went with an all white duvet set from The White Company for the bed to brighten the space a bit. At first I wasn’t sure about the dark walls, but they’ve really grown on me! I don’t know if I would paint my bedroom like this in the future, but it’s actually very soothing. Again, the room came fully equipped with the bed and mattress so I really didn’t need to do much!
The kitchen is definitely a huge reason why I love this flat so much. In NYC, the kitchen in our apartment was basically non-existent. You couldn’t fit more than one person in at a time, there was no dishwasher, and we had the tiniest little stove and fridge (this is common for New York apartments though, and given my lack of cooking skills it really didn’t bother me). So when I saw this kitchen, I couldn’t believe how big it was! From the modern and updated finishes, to the size, to the amazing natural light – it was my dream kitchen. There’s even a dining room table to eat at, which is another thing we didn’t have in New York.
This kitchen is fully equipped with a dishwasher, full size stove and oven, full size fridge, and a washing machine. My only complaint would be that I wish the countertops were marble instead of wood (it’s really hard to keep clean), but beggars can’t be choosers as they say! And I love the herringbone tile backsplash – it’s something I would consider implementing in my future house.
I really hope you enjoyed this tour of our modern London flat!
PS. Did you notice my site got a bit of a facelift? I’ve had the same theme for over a year, and decided it was time to switch things up for 2019! Let me know your thoughts!
