Last week I had the opportunity to get out of the city and escape to the beautiful Coworth Park hotel to enjoy the ultimate polo day. What does an ultimate polo day entail? Allow me to fill you in on the fabulous details!
The Perfect Polo Day
I was already a (very) casual fan of polo thanks to the Veuve Clicquot Polo Match in NYC. I attended in 2016 and 2017, and had a blast both times. But let’s be honest here, I most certainly spent more time sipping the rosé champagne than watching the game. To say I was somewhat unfamiliar with the actual rules of polo would be putting it lightly. I jumped at the chance to take a lesson because I used to ride horses when I was younger, but the opportunity to ride rarely presented itself as I got older. Hence why I hadn’t been on a horse in 10+ years.
Coworth Park was the perfect place to have my first polo experience. They are the only hotel in the UK to feature its own polo fields and practice facilities. They have two professional fields, with lessons by Guards Polo Academy. Our polo day was led by Ebe Sievwright, who coincidentally is the commentator at the Veuve matches. We learned how to properly hold a polo stick as well as all 4 swings (near-side and off-side forehand and backhand). We practiced our swings on the ground before we moved on to the horses, and they provide wooden horses for practicing as well. This may come as an absolute shock, but it turns out I wasn’t a natural 😉 Perhaps it’s best I leave polo to the professionals, which is exactly what we did next. After the lesson we headed to Guards Polo Club for a picnic and to watch a professional match. Guests of Coworth Park have the added benefit of being able to go to the polo club, even without a membership, to enjoy a game. It was exciting to watch them play after just attempting it myself – the pros certainly make it look easy!
At the end of the game we headed back to Coworth to freshen up and enjoy a fabulous lunch from the hotels Michelin-star Executive chef Adam Smith. He truly turns food into art – it was my second time having lunch there and I basically had to be rolled out both times because I all but licked my plate clean (all 3 courses!). As if the day hadn’t been exciting enough, after lunch we headed off for yet another adventure – a helicopter ride!
I’ve always wanted to go on a helicopter ride but just hadn’t managed to make it happen yet. I nearly fell off my chair in excitement when I saw the itinerary for the day included this amazing experience. Coworth Park has it’s own landing pad for helicopters, making the commute from London a quick 15 minutes should you choose to fly. Our pilot from Starspeed made the ride smooth and enjoyable, and he made sure we knew when we were flying over landmarks such as Buckingham Palace or the Tower of London. Seeing London from above was truly one of the most incredible things I’ve ever done! Now I want to take a helicopter tour everywhere I go – it’s the best way to see a new place!
Next time you’re in London I highly recommend spending a few days in the British countryside at Coworth Park. From polo lessons, to a gorgeous spa, a Michelin-star chef, and so much more – it really is an oasis and the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. Do yourself a favor and book a trip! I’m already plotting my next return…
