While my mom was in town last week we took an afternoon trip to Petersham Nurseries in Richmond. It’s a secret garden oasis tucked less than an hour away from the city. I had seen it before on Instagram, but nothing can prepare you for the real thing.
Petersham Nurseries is a truly beautiful spot that is part garden / store and part café / tearoom. My mom loves to garden, and was in heaven the moment we stepped foot on the property. It’s much bigger than it appears, and we spent at least 2 hours roaming the gardens and browsing the shops. I don’t know much about plants, but my mom said many of the blooms she had never even heard of before! We eventually found our way into the garden shop, which is any gardeners dream come true. They have everything from their own blend of seeds, to tools, to gorgeous planters. I don’t even plant and I wanted to take some of the ceramic planters home with me!
Next to the garden shop is a serene all glass building which serves as the tearoom. You don’t need reservations to eat at the tearoom, and it looks like a lovely spot to relax . We didn’t eat there, however, as we had late lunch reservations at the café (be sure to make reservations as far in advance as possible. It books up quickly!). The café is an absolutely amazing spot tucked away under hundreds of tree branches. The menu changes daily based on what’s fresh from their gardens. Everything is cooked with their own herbs, fruits, and veggies – it was truly one of the best meals I’ve ever enjoyed in my entire life.
We then wandered around the home shop, which I could have spent at least another hour in. It had the most beautiful and unique home pieces I’ve ever seen, from handmade pottery, to glassware, to blankets. I wanted to bring it all home with me!! My mom picked up a couple of amazing hand lotions, and I grabbed a really cute little hand woven straw tote bag. They also blend their own candle scents from the flowers right in their gardens, which would make a lovely gift.
I honestly can’t recommend Petersham Nurseries enough. It is absolutely worth your visit, even if you don’t have much time in London! It’s the perfect summer afternoon activity and I can’t wait for another excuse to go back!
