I know what you’re thinking – whoa, whoa, whoa… what?! And I honestly feel the same way. It definitely hasn’t sunk in yet that in 10 days I’ll be flying over to London on a one way ticket! I’m going to do my best to answer all the big questions about why we’re moving in today’s post, but please feel free to reach out to me if you want more details!
Why London? Connor works in finance, and while his company has an office here in NYC, the headquarters is actually in London. You may have noticed that I made several trips there last year, and that was because Connor was there for work. When a position opened up at the London office a few weeks ago, it was just too good of an opportunity to pass up.
How does that work for you? Do you have a visa? Connor was (obviously) easily able to obtain a work visa, but the big question was how I would be able to live there. To be honest, this was quite the debacle for me. Since we won’t be married for another 6 months, I obviously don’t qualify for a spousal visa. This meant we had two routes to choose from: As a US citizen, I’m able to live in London for up to 6 months without a visa. The timing of that would have worked out really well with our wedding, however, the downside is I wouldn’t be able qualify for their national health insurance and I couldn’t make any money (even from my blog!). For obvious reasons this was our backup plan. The better option for me was to apply for what’s called a dependent visa, but let me tell ya, it wasn’t easy. I won’t bore you with the details of the visa application process, perhaps that could be for another post if there’s interest. But luckily it all worked out, and I found out last Friday my visa was APPROVED!
How long will you be over there? We aren’t sure! Our visas are good for 9 years, so that’s the maximum amount of time we can live in the UK before returning home. Connor doesn’t have a contractual amount of time he has to be out there, so we plan on just taking it day by day and seeing how we like it!
When do you leave? Next Friday, May 18th!! And yes, I do realize we will be getting there just in time for the royal wedding 😉
Do you have a place in London yet? No – During the visa application process we weren’t allowed to travel over there to look for a flat. We’ve been doing as much research as possible online, and we really like the Kensington and Chelsea areas – I’m excited to start the search process! Until we find something suitable we will be in a hotel near Connors office.
I think that should answer most of the big questions for now. I’ll definitely be sharing more about the move and our new life in London in the coming weeks. I’m so excited to start this new chapter in our lives and I hope you enjoy following along on this crazy adventure!
