Yep, it’s true! With just over 5 months to go until “I Do”, I can finally say that I found my perfect wedding dress (not pictured above, obviously!). For whatever reason, dress shopping was just not a priority for me. I still think this is quite funny, because I LOVE to shop! But over the last few months I found myself prioritizing other wedding details first, such as making sure my bridesmaids love their dresses and picking the perfect cake flavor. Up until about a month ago I hadn’t even tried any wedding dresses on! I’ve learned a lot of things in the past few weeks, so I thought I would share my two cents on the matter. Dress shopping isn’t always easy, so remember to take a deep breath and keep these things in mind!
KNOW YOUR STYLE
I browsed WeddingWire for hours to get a good idea of what my taste was. I considered things like time of year, my venue, and what flatters my body type. They have TONS of awesome inspiration to help you narrow down your options. You can even take a little quiz to find your perfect style, which is really fun. I highly recommend saving the images you find and having them ready to show your stylist, because that can really help narrow down the options. Warning: whether it’s your stylist, your mom, or MOH – whoever! – it’s likely that someone will want you to try on a dress that you don’t like. My advice is to try it on with an open mind, because occasionally you can be surprised! But most likely you will hate it even more than you imagined, and that’s okay too 😉 No one knows your style and what makes you feel good better than YOU – if it makes you feel beautiful, then it’s perfect.
STICK TO YOUR BUDGET
Wedding dresses can get really expensive, really fast. Be sure to tell your stylist what your max budget is right away – I can’t imagine anything worse than falling in love with a dress that you can’t afford! And I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to have a big budget to get your dream dress. I spent $400 (nope, that’s not missing a zero!) on mine and I couldn’t be happier. As with all designer things, price doesn’t necessarily equate style or beauty. You WILL find something you love in your price range!
Already have your shoes? Awesome, bring them to your appointment. Plan on wearing Spanx under your dress? Bring those too! And always be sure to wear nude undergarments – you are trying on white dresses after all! This may seem like a no-brainer, but one of my stylists told me she has at least one bride a day who forgets and ends up with major VPL!
DON’T LIMIT YOURSELF
When I started searching for my perfect wedding dress, I looked in all the usual places – BHLDN, David’s Bridal, Kleinfeld’s, etc. Ya know, bridal shops. I was quickly becoming frustrated because I found some dresses that I liked, but nothing made me have that “OMG I’m getting married!” moment. One day I got an email from one of my favorite ready-to-wear brands (I’m not going to tell you which one because it would give too much away!), and I saw the dress right there in the email. Yep – I found my dress at a store that doesn’t even sell wedding dresses! I ordered it immediately and loved it even more in person than online. So learn from me and don’t limit yourself to the traditional wedding stores. If you’re having a hard time finding what you want, step outside the bridal box. You might find the perfect dress where you least expect it!
I hope you found these tips helpful, and remember to HAVE FUN!
